Mazna maca u kafani sa pucnjavom / Sweet Little Kitty in a Shooting Bar

As with any modern city in its infancy, and Belgrade was no different from other world cities, in addition to the construction of various state institutions, military and cultural institutions, schools, hospitals, markets and hotels, Belgrade cafes were of special importance to locals. They were the center of city events, politics was discussed, world events were discussed, deals were made, revolutions were raised, marriages were arranged and broken. There were fashionable cafes, bohemian, but also those with a not so nice voice.

Such was the tavern on the corner of Nušićeva and Dečanska streets, known as the tavern with shooting, gambling and prostitution. Due to the reputation, the owners often changed, as well as the names of the taverns, so it was called "Pejina kafana", "Ruska kruna", "Akvarium" ... "Kiss at midnight", but meetings of the first workers' associations were also held. Namely, in 1894, Vasa Pelagić led the first Labour Day procession from this tavern.

However, the most picturesque period of the existence of this cafe was before the beginning of the Second World War, when the owner was a certain Blagoje, graciously called "Kapone". He ran an illegal casino, and it was also the main place to enjoy a new drug - opium and heroin. Raids were a regular occurrence, but Blagoje "Kapone" was skilful in avoiding arrests - he had policemen on his payroll, as well as underground tunnels that led to Terazije, far enough from trouble. The "yellow" press was so often left empty-handed to catch some of the most prominent Belgraders in trouble, although rumors circulated in the city that one of the main visitors to the cafe, and the biggest gambler, the son of the former Prime Minister, Radomir Rada Pasic.

The whirlwind of war took Blagoje "Capone", he was never heard of again, and the cafe was demolished. In its place today is the Centroprom building, which is experiencing a similar fate - affair after affair, changing owners and names ...
